How the moka pot ratio works
Moka pot “ratio” is mostly fixed by hardware: fill the basket level (no tamp) and fill the boiler to just below the safety valve. That usually lands near 1:10 by weight. Use the calculator when you weigh grounds for a 3-cup or 6-cup pot, or when you want tablespoon estimates for a new size.
Moka pot tips
- Use a fine-medium grind — finer than drip, coarser than espresso.
- Start with hot water in the chamber to avoid cooking the grounds.
- Remove from heat when the stream turns pale and starts to sputter.

Frequently asked questions
What is the coffee ratio for a moka pot?+
Moka pots brew at roughly 1:10 — about 18 g of coffee for a 3-cup pot holding around 180 ml of water. The basket and chamber sizes largely fix the ratio for you.
How much coffee for a 3-cup moka pot?+
A 3-cup moka pot takes about 15–18 g of coffee — enough to fill the basket level without tamping — and about 160–200 ml of water, filled to just below the safety valve.
Do you tamp coffee in a moka pot?+
No. Fill the basket level and brush off the excess, but do not tamp. Compressed grounds raise pressure and can cause bitter, sputtering brews or clog the pot.
Is moka pot coffee as strong as espresso?+
Moka coffee is stronger than drip but weaker than true espresso. It brews at 1–2 bars of pressure versus 9 bars for espresso, so it has espresso-like flavor with less body and no real crema.
