How the drip coffee maker ratio works

Drip coffee ratio is coffee-to-water by weight: at 1:16, use about 15 g (roughly 3 tablespoons) per 8 oz of water in the tank. Carafe “cups” are usually 5 oz (148 ml), so a 12-cup brew is about 1.8 L and needs ~110 g of coffee — not 12 full mugs of grounds. If the pot tastes weak, check the cup size first, then grind slightly finer.

Drip coffee maker tips

  • Use a medium grind, similar in texture to table salt.
  • A 12-cup carafe is usually about 1.8 L — roughly 110 g of coffee at 1:16.
  • If your machine brews fast and weak, grind slightly finer instead of adding coffee.

Frequently asked questions

What is the drip coffee ratio?+

Use 1:16 as a starting point — about 60 g of coffee per liter of water. That is roughly 15 g (3 tablespoons) per standard 8 oz cup of water in the tank.

How many tablespoons of coffee for a 12-cup coffee maker?+

A “12-cup” carafe is usually about 1.8 L (12 × 5 oz cups). At 1:16 that needs about 110 g of coffee — around 22 level tablespoons. Halve it for a 6-cup brew.

Why does my drip coffee taste weak?+

Usually too little coffee or too coarse a grind. Check that you are using about 15 g per 240 ml of water, then grind slightly finer. Carafe cup markings are 5 oz, not 8 oz, which throws off many recipes.

What grind size for a drip coffee maker?+

Medium — similar to table salt. Flat-bottom baskets can go slightly finer than cone-shaped baskets. If coffee tastes bitter, coarsen the grind; if sour or weak, go finer.
