How this ratio works
Coffee ratios are expressed by weight: 1 part ground coffee to X parts water. A 1:16 ratio means 1 gram of coffee for every 16 grams (milliliters) of water. This calculator converts between grams, tablespoons, cups, and fluid ounces so you can brew with whatever you have on hand.
Tips for french press
- Use a coarse grind so fines do not slip through the mesh.
- Bloom is optional; stir once after adding all water.
- For a bolder cup, try 1:14. For lighter, 1:16.
Frequently asked questions
What ratio for French press coffee?+
Most French press recipes use 1:15 — about 20 g coffee per 300 ml water for a typical press. Stronger coffee can go to 1:14; lighter to 1:16.
How much coffee for French press for 2 cups?+
Two cups (about 474 ml) at 1:15 needs roughly 32 g coffee, or about 6–7 tablespoons. Use the calculator with cups as your water unit.
French press coffee grams per cup?+
At 1:15, use about 16 g coffee per 8 oz cup. French press extraction is full-immersion, so slightly less coffee than pour over can still taste rich.
How long to steep French press?+
Steep 4 minutes after adding water just off boil, then plunge slowly. Coarse grind helps avoid muddy cups and over-extraction.
