AeroPress ratio

Most AeroPress recipes use a 1:15 ratio — about 15 g coffee for 225 ml water. Concentrate-style recipes go stronger (1:12) and are topped up with hot water after pressing.

How the aeropress ratio works

AeroPress ratios are coffee-to-water by weight, same as pour over. At 1:15, 15 g of coffee needs 225 ml of water — a typical single-mug brew that fits the chamber. Inverted vs standard changes steeping, not the ratio. For a larger mug, brew a stronger concentrate and dilute after the press.

How much coffee for AeroPress?

For one mug, use 15–17 g of coffee (about 2.5–3 tablespoons) with 225–250 ml of water at 1:15. The AeroPress chamber holds about 250 ml comfortably — that is a full-chamber brew at roughly 17 g coffee.

Want a 12 oz mug? Brew ~17 g with 200–220 ml as a concentrate, press, then top up with hot water to 355 ml. Or set the calculator to 1:12 and dilute after pressing.

AeroPress tips

  • Use a medium-fine grind, slightly finer than pour over.
  • Steep 1–2 minutes, then press slowly over about 30 seconds.
  • For a concentrate to dilute like an Americano, brew at 1:12 or stronger.

Frequently asked questions

What is the AeroPress ratio?+

A 1:15 ratio works for most standard AeroPress recipes — about 15 g coffee for 225 ml water. Concentrate-style recipes use 1:12 or stronger and are diluted after pressing.

How much coffee for AeroPress?+

Use 15–17 g of coffee (about 2.5–3 tablespoons) with 225–250 ml of water at 1:15. The AeroPress chamber holds about 250 ml of water comfortably.

AeroPress inverted vs standard ratio?+

The ratio is the same either way — inversion changes steeping, not strength. Inverted lets you steep longer without drip-through, which suits stronger 1:12 concentrate recipes.

What grind size for AeroPress?+

Medium-fine, slightly finer than pour over. Finer grinds need shorter steeps and slower presses; coarser grinds work with longer 2–3 minute steeps.
