About The Grind Calc
The Grind Calc is a free set of coffee-to-water ratio calculators for home brewers.
Why this site exists
Getting the coffee-to-water ratio right is the single biggest lever for better coffee at home — and the math is just annoying enough that most people guess. This site does the arithmetic for you: enter how much coffee or water you have, pick a ratio, and get amounts in grams, tablespoons, milliliters, cups, and fluid ounces.
How the calculators work
Every calculator uses ratios by weight — 1 part ground coffee to X parts water. Each brew method has its own page with a sensible default ratio, method-specific tips, and answers to common questions:
- French press — 1:15 default ratio
- Pour over — 1:16 default ratio
- Cold brew — 1:8 concentrate default ratio
- Chemex — 1:16 default ratio
- AeroPress — 1:15 default ratio
- Moka pot — 1:10 default ratio
- Drip coffee maker — 1:16 default ratio
- Espresso — 1:2 default ratio
- Turkish coffee — 1:10 default ratio
Conversions assume a level tablespoon of ground coffee weighs about 5 grams and a US cup is 237 ml. Tablespoon weights vary with grind size and roast, so weighing coffee in grams is always more accurate.
